It could be a bad battery or regulator. To check the regulator to see if it putting out the correct voltage check the battery voltage while the bike is running. It should be around 14 volts.

Try checking the gorund cable at the opposite end from the battery. I had one come loose on my sporty and it would not start but the lights would come on.

I would recommend reading the packaging first and foremost to see if the battery and product are compatible. With that being said, it does appear that the Battery Tender Jr. would be compatible.

Unless you have a digital speedo there is no reason why the battery would effect the cable at all. Speedo cables are completely independent of anything and everything else on most bikes. (Again, unless there is a digital speedo on the bike.) Its most likely just coincidence that the cable went out at the same time you replaced the battery. Check your connections at the guage and the hub and make sure they are tight b4 you replace the cable.
Laptops that's battery is fully charged does not weigh any more or less than one that's battery is not fully charged. If there is a difference, it would be so small you would not be able to tell.
