Here in my area [SE Texas] all of the national chain type auto parts stores [O'Reilly, Advance, Autozone, etc.] have handheld test equipment with which they can test batteries, alternators, electrical systems, etc. while my vehicle is parked in their parking lot.
This service is free. Check it out as maybe some parts stores in your area have this service.
Check the voltage with a volt meter at the battery with the engine running at idle. You should read 13.5 to 15.5 volts. Any less and the alternator is not charging properly.
Check fuseable link on alternator Check fuseable link on alternator
as a tester
your alternator is either week in volts. Use a volt tester. or alternator is now working. replace it. I had same porblem with three batterys to test the alternator turn car on let run on idle and disconnect the positive car should still be running if it shuts off first check all wires on alternator if still connected then alternator is bad TIME TO REPLACE IT.
If you have a battery load tester, it is also an alternator tester. Put it on your batt., a good battery should read 12 volts--start the engine and watch the needle, it should go up to the 13 volt range. Turn on all the lights, heater fan on high, then check the guage, it should still be in the 13 v. range. If at any time it goes below 12 volts, then the alt. is weak.
You don't. Disconnecting a battery cable to "check" the alternator is not a good idea. The removal of a cable with the engine running cuases a voltage spike that can damage the computer system on the car. The proper way to check the alternator is with a volt meter.
Use a volt meter and check the DC voltage at battery terminals with engine running. It should read in the 13-14 volt range, if below then alternator is no good.
DC volt meter, and a load tester. if you dont have one, try a NAPA store.
with a voltage tester or meter that has a rating higher than what you are expecting to find Most testers / meters are rated 600 volt
Check the ground connections. Can also be defective battery cables. Check all cable connections on the + & - cables. Also check the alternator drive belt.
Either the alternator you installed is defective or you wired it incorrectly. Check the voltage at the battery with the engine idling. You should read from 13.5 to 15.5 volts with a digital DC volt meter.
Perhaps alternator is not charging battery properly - check with a volt meter A fully charged battery should read approx. 12.8 volts without engine running reading should be approx. 14.2 with engine running with good alternator
