Dipstick! Honda does things different from every other brand of car...as anyone who's ever noticed that Honda puts its four-cylinder engines on the other side of the car from every other brand. And so it is with checking the Transmission Fluid, and in this case Honda got it right. On a Honda, transmission fluid is checked with the engine off--as opposed to every other car, where you check it when the engine's running.

There is no dipstick for the trans.
pull the check plug it will either be gear lube or auto trans fluid
There will be a cap labeled as auto trans fluid. It should be pulled out, wiped off, re-inserted, and pulled back out to measure the level of the fluid in the chamber.
Is your Alero a 2.4, a 2.2 ecotec or a 3400?
It requires a special tool (the dipstick) that only a dealer has.
There is a dipstick that looks just like the one for the oil.

The dipstick is a dealer special tool. You can not check your own transmission fluid.
