If it is, in fact, the 'check engine' light, it is reacting to a signal from the vehicle's diagnostic computer that it senses something not in 'spec.' It may be simply signalling that you are due for lubrication service - or that your gas tank cap is loose. There are other causes but those are the two most common ones. If that doesn't solve your prolem then you need a mechanic to put an engine diagnostice computer on it to find the cause.
