Go to the local library and obtain a repair manual for any escort up to 1994. Your car has the OBD 1 which is easy to access codes from but you will need the key as there are many codes that can be stored. Basically you take a paper clip and short across the diagnostic link and the engine light will flash but again there is a procedure you need to follow. I have done it many times but not on an Escort; but is is not hard once you get the manual.
Take the stereo out and check the wiring at the back harness. Make sure it is clean and tight.

I do not know that it would not work.I would strongly advise you NOT to use a older wiring harness in a newer model due to wiring breaking down, corrosion, brittle insulation. However you should check into something like http://www.painlesswiring.com which should offer a new harness, complete directions, and a sure fit for your model.Time wise and problems a new harness is much simplier and worry free not to mention the cost is prettty cheap and piece of mind.
It is possible that you connected the power wire for the harness to the computer power. It was like that in my truck when someone did an at home addition of a wiring harness for the new head and changer. Check your wiring.
