Go to the local library and obtain a repair manual for any escort up to 1994. Your car has the OBD 1 which is easy to access codes from but you will need the key as there are many codes that can be stored. Basically you take a paper clip and short across the diagnostic link and the engine light will flash but again there is a procedure you need to follow. I have done it many times but not on an Escort; but is is not hard once you get the manual.
It is possible that you connected the power wire for the harness to the computer power. It was like that in my truck when someone did an at home addition of a wiring harness for the new head and changer. Check your wiring.

You can order a new engine wiring harness for a 92 Cavalier 3.1 at auto part stores. You can also check with a certified dealer.
Check the fuses and relays and if that doesn't work check the wiring harness.

If the motor is the same the wiring harness should fit. Only thing I would check is the sending units. As long as both vehicles have gauges or both have warning lights all should be fine.
You can find an external wiring harness for a 1971 Evinrude 25 Hp outboard at different boating shops. You can also check with the manufacturer.
