Get a mechanics stethescope. Engine idling listen to each injector, you should hear them clicking as they operate. If you're having problems gat a can of JECTRON fuel injection cleaner or Techron fuel injection cleaner. Add to 1/2 tank of fuel. Don't waste your money on STP or other cleaners, they don't do the job IMHO.

You don't! Vw's use a CIS fuel injection system (CIS stands for Continuous Injection System), the fuel accumulator holds the fuel pressure when the car is off, so it can start right up when you crank the engine again, since fuel is right there at the nozzle tip of the fuel injectors.

Check the 5th injector (cold start). It may be stuck open. Check for plugged fuel return line from the fuel distributor. Check the fuel system pressure. JC Whitney carries a CIS-E gauge kit for $60. Follow the directions with the kit.
