You can check a shcok absorber by bouncing one corner of a car. The shock absorber simply, as the name, assorbs the energy from movement into heat. By bouncing the corner of the car, when you stop, if the car continues to bounce more than approx 2 times it is likely to be on its way out as it is no longer absorbing the energy as it should. My old car would bound 5-6 times.

A shock absorber is effectivly a dampner, like that on your car boot that aids you opening/ shutting the boot. If you open/ shut the boot several times in a row you will feel the dampner warm up.
