a shop manual will tell the factors using a digital ohm meter check resistance between the perscribed connections ie. two connections at the wire harness, coil tower to one wire connetion, coil tower to case, and wire connections to case.

There is a CEL, Check Engine Light, on the 1989 Thunderbird.
When i bought my thunderbird the key to the ignition didnt fit the door locks so i had to replace the locks. That might be the best answer. :]
