AnswerNormally on GM vehicles you check the fluid with the Transmission Fluid warm, parked on a level surface, engine running, transmission in park. According to the manufacturer, there are also some GM vehicles that have a sealed for life transmission. On these you cannot check the level. Your owners manual will spell all this out for you. If it does have a dipstick, look on the stick for directions.

All transmissions require maintenance. On a Cavalier that is supposed to be sealed for life, you can still check and add transmission fluid.

2003 to 2005 Cavalier transmission fluid level/filling.

With the vehicle running, you remove a bolt located on the transmission. It is on the passenger side, where the CV joint connects to the transmission. It is also about 3 inches above the transmission oil pan. You can't miss it, looks like it has no reason to be there.

You add Transmission fluid until it starts dripping from the hole missing the bolt. Place the bolt back into place. Your transmission is now filled to level.

Don't forget, DO NOT ADD CHEAP transmission fluid to this vehicle. It is very delicate and cheap fluid will make the transmission slip. Add ONLY Dexron-Mercon or higher quality transmission fluid.

Where is the transmission drain plug on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier?

The Transmission Fluid Check bolt is in the front right part of the Transmission Pan. This is in regards to a 1998 Chevy Cavalier (since I have one myself) and may not be correct for any other year. This bolt is just to check the fluid level is correct and will not drain the entire Transmission fluid reservoir, you must remove the pan to remove the transmission fluid.
