On any vehicle with automatic transmission you must:
* check the fluid level with the engine running and at normal operating temperature * remove the Transmission Fluid dipstick and wipe it clean * re-insert dipstick until it stops and then pull out again. * check the level If it is within the hatch marks, you are okay. If the level is low, add tranny fluid at the most a cup at a time, and recheck the level after each addition. This is all done WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, by the way. Overfilling the tranny fluid is just as harmful as not having enough fluid.

need to know where transmission plug is for a 2002 ford explorer?
Starting in 2002 the Ford Explorer ( four door ) does not have an automatic transmission fluid dipstick
The 2002 Ford Explorer has a 5-speed manual.
Starting with the 2002 Ford Explorer ( 4 door ) there isn't an automatic transmission fluid dipstick that allows you to refill the transmission . The Ford dealer has a way of checking the transmission fluid level from underneath the vehicle , I couldn't find anything in the 2002 Ford Explorer maintenance schedule so I would ask a Ford dealer . I know that on my 1995 Ford Explorer I've had the dealer use a machine a couple of times that pumps in new transmission fluid through the transmission cooler lines as the old fluid is pumped out
