This is a job for someone with access to garage equipment. For reasons unknown to me the transmission in this vehicle does not have a dipstick as is typical with American and many foreign vehicles. You need to have the car on a lift so the underbody is accessible and the car is level. Then you have access to the drain and fill plugs on the bottom of the transmission oil pan. The fill plug is the large Allen plug at the rear of the pan. Drive the car until it's up to operating temperature, put car on lift and remove fill plug. If Transmission Fluid starts to run from plug hole you're OK. If not, add fluid until it does. BE SURE to use the correct fluid. I believe the 530i uses Dexron as I'm pretty sure that model has a GM transmission.
You can add transmission fluid, to your 1987 BMW through the transmission dipstick tube. Using a funnel will make adding the fluid much easier.
there is no dipstick. level is checked via a removable plug on the transmission.
There is the transmission fluid stick under the hood near the block twords the back of the vehicle take out the stick and fill it up allow about 5 min to let it all drain down so when you dip it will not show all over your stick, run the vehicle and then check the fluid level with clean dip stick. You are welcome BMW POUWWA !
It's a special product. Rather pricey also. $17.00us / liter - 6 liters required for filter change. Automatic Transmission Fluid - ESSO LT71141 - 1
