In the United States, there are three major credit reporting bureaus - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion - that track your credit and report the information they collect to anyone who you authorize to view your credit report (such as banks for loans, employers before they offer you a job, rental companies before they offer you a lease, etc.). Once every year you are permitted to view the information these companies have collected - your credit report - free of charge. See the "related links" below for a direct link to view your free yearly credit report.

However, realize that your credit "score" or "rating" isn't the same as your credit report. There are a couple of different systems in use to determine a number that represents your credit worthiness based on the information in your credit report(s). The most commonly known is the FICO Risk Score, which is used by Experian and TransUnion. Equifax uses a scoring system called a Beacon score. These are each slightly different and will change based on what information is included in your credit report at each bureau (so Experian and TransUnion might use a very similar system, but if they have different information about you, the score might be different for each). You do have to pay to review these scores as they are not included in your free annual credit report. They are available through most credit/identity theft monitoring programs and from the bureaus themselves. Additionally, a couple of websites are offering free access to your credit scores - see the "related links" below.
