Many people choose a career in which they have no interest at all and within a few years move to something else, wasting all that time and money on a degree they do not want to use.

You should ask yourself a few questions concerning your choice of career. What do you enjoy doing? Do you have hobbies you love, playing music, writing poetry, tinkering with electronics, repairing computers, building websites...the list could go on and on. The best choice for a career would be something you are passionate about and feel you could do your work in that area and enjoy doing it. Consider also any special talents you may have.

Once you have a list of your interests in mind, check to see what job positions there are pertaining to those interests. Narrow your list as you go. Think of the pros and cons to each option on your list. Ask yourself questions such as: Would this career have good benefits such as healthcare, retirement programs, etc? Would this career require you to relocate? Would this career require more time from you personal or family life than you would be willing to sacrifice? Would there be room for advancement in this career, or would you always stay on the same rung of the corporate/industrial ladder?

Another thing to consider is, how much money do you want to make? Would this career pay a salary that would sustain a home and family? Provide for their future as well as your own? Here you may have to choose between a higher paying career you think you'll burn out on or absolutely hate and a lower-paying career you feel you'll enjoy for years.

Just remember - each major has many branches of opportunities. For example, with an English major, you could become a journalist, an author, a ghost-writer, commercial writing, technical writing, college professor, elementary or high school teacher, script writer for plays, television, jingle writer...the job options for each major you consider is nearly endless.

Many people choose a career in which they have no interest at all and within a few years move to something else, wasting all that time and money on a degree they do not want to use.

Career development is what you do to get where you want to go. Basically, you decide what sort of job you want, and then you figure out the best way to get that job, and once you have it you decide how to get better at it and get promoted to where you want to be. So, for example, you decide you want to work with animals; you figure you like dogs and you want to spend time working with them. What jobs involve working with dogs? Police office with the canine unit, pet vet, dog trainer, pet groomer. Which one sounds best to you? Say you like medicine as well as animals: you might pick pet vet. So you start looking at college degrees with an emphasis on animal health; some colleges have degrees in veterinary science and others don't, you'd have to pick one that does have a degree. You might also look up local vet clinics and give them a call, see about volunteering some of your time. How can you choose a career? Part of that I've answered above: find something you enjoy, something you love, and work towards that. Find your passion and follow it, constantly try and get better at it. If your passion is Video Games, start looking at schools to teach you how to design them. If your passion involves knitting, maybe look into opening a yarn store. Whatever you choose, work hard at making it succeed - work on the bits that aren't fun as hard as you work on the bits that are. No career is easy, but seeing the end result of hard work can be deeply satisfying.

First you would narrow down what your natural talents are, then look at the environment that you would prefer to work in (inside, outside, office?). Naturally, pay increases with the amount of knowledge (schooling plus experience), so that should not be the first thing you look at. There are several tests that can be taken to help you gain insight into the fields that would suit you best. Find them at your high school, local junior college or, possibly, online. Again, finding what is best for you is based on what you can do by talent and inclination, since it is important to like what you do.
