While wearing the active ring, speak to Gertrude about kittens and select the third option to 'charm' her; you may then select the colour of your kitten.
Another method of coloring your cat would be the after-quest reward from Swept Away, which grants you the option of dying your cat purple after completing the Purple Cats miniquest.
