Much depends on where the installation will be used and the voltage of it, and the current it's got to carry.

Automobile connections - which are normally for 12 volts - can be spade connectors or bullet connectors or chocolate block connectors.

Mains connections are made using junction boxes or chocolate block connectors.

But the above are in addition to the connections within the item to be connected, which normally has a hole that the wire goes into and a small screw that tightens onto the wire to stop it coming out.

The wires should be twisted together, then a wire nut of the correct size needs to be twisted on then place a wrap of electrical tape around it, half on the wire and half around the nut. Also, you should wrap a light switch and outlet with tape so if it is removed and the power is on it does not come in contact with the box and short.
