DNA is transcribed to RNA, which is then 'read' by ribosomes, which assemble the protein subunits by matching each three base pair segment of DNA to a specific amino acid. The protein then folds itself into a well-defined shape and does whatever it does.
Basically what happens is a piece of mRNA (messenger RNA) collects the information from the DNA, and takes this to a ribosome. Chemicals within the cell are then attracted to the ribosome (certain chemicals that are specific to the information from the DNA), and they form together to form a protein. This whole process happens really quickly.
