One way is to put the file in a folder, then open that folder, then go to tools at the top and click it, then click folder options, then click the "View" tab at the top, then scroll down about halfway, and uncheck "Hide extensions for know file types", go back to where you can see your pdf or jpeg file in your folder, and rename or put .(some file type) instead of .pdf or.jpg. You should get a pop-up saying "If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?", go ahead and click yes and it should work.
