Whatever you do, you need to leave it accessible for any future Plumbing issues. In the past, I think people made a curtain to cover the area. There were some pretty strange curtains! Thinking creatively, you could cover it with with colored tape, make it into something else (palmtree? monkey? flower) or other item--sort of hiding it in sight. Paint may peel, especially if the pipe alternates between hot and cold, so be careful what you decide in that case.

You can extend the faucet pipe by, getting an extra metal pipe and welding it with the faucet pipe and it shall be extended.
There should be a nut around the chrome pipe holding it to the brass. Loosen the nut and pull the chrome pipe out.
Bathroom sinks use 1 1/4 pipe for the downspout in the sink. You can use 1 1/2 from that by using an adapter washer in the connection above the trap.
