Pick up the Laser Lance from the jungle then climb up and go right to meet Sir Cador. Climb the rope and jump across the Phoenix eggs to free the unicorn from the cage. When you battle the birds, the small "bee" birds can be killed by a click shot. But to knock out the red "torpedo" birds (and the Mother Phoenix), you have to use the power shot. Click and hold the mouse button until you reach full power, then release the button to fire. You have to hit the Mother Phoenix three times, in the head, to destroy it.

There is no way to beat the Mother Phoenix like that. When you have the Laser Lance on the Jungle Planet, free the flying unicorn and fly against the Phoenix Birds. The lance can fire quick shots to kill the smaller "bee" birds, but you can hold the mouse button down to charge the lance for a more powerful shot. Release it to fire. The power shot can destroy a flock of the bee birds, the red torpedo birds, and eventually the Mother Phoenix. You have to shoot her three times, in the head, and dodge her if she comes up behind you from the left.
