The manning formula is used to size the irrigation canal or any hydraulic section. Water may be transmitted from the source to the field by unlined or lined canal, pipeline or combination. The Manning formula relates the transmission media (the cross section area and resistance to flow) to the flow characteristics ie volume Q.
Examples of irrigation system are,Perennial irrigation (Dams)Direct irrigation (river canal irrigation)Storage irrigation (tanks and resevoirs)

Lift irrigation is a method of irrigation in which water is not transported by natural flow (as in gravity-fed canal systems) but is lifted with pumps or other means.
The hydraulic structure in which irrigation canal is passing over the drainage is known as aqueduct. This structure is suitable when bed of canal is above the highest flood level of drainage. while The hydraulic structure in which the drainage is taken over the irrigation canal, but the canal water passes below the drainage under siphonic action is known as siphon super passage. This structure is suitable when the bed level of drainage is below the full supply level of the canal. Farhad Ahmadzi
canal irrigation system is required very long time span. it aslo requires great labour. The system also requires large amount of money. the land areas and soil has to be utilized and modified for this system. there is a great chance of over flow in the canal which can led to a flood. canals carry huge amount of slit which can also damage the crops if in excessive amount.
