∙ 9y agoA survey will have to be done to determine what the current connected wattage load is. A clamp on amp meter will do the job nicely. Find the draw from each of the single phase service legs. Using the wattage from the heater divide it by 240 volts. This will give you the additional load in amps that you will be adding to the distribution panel. Unless the 100 amp panel is rated at 100% capacity, the 100 amp distribution can only be loaded to 80 amps. The safest way for a home owner to find the panel loading is to get an electrician to do the calculations for you as the distribution has to be worked on while it is "hot". His report will tell you if there is enough capacity left in the panel to start your project. Rule of thumb is that a 100 amp distribution panel on average draws about 55 to 60 amps in daily daytime use.
