no doubt that many 2 3/4" shells have been fired in shotguns chambered for 2 9/16" but it is not considered safe. It is a easy fix for a gunsmith to lengthen the chamber to 2 3/4' if the gun is safe to fire. Magnum or heavy loads are not recommended for most of these old shotguns
J Stevens made several models of pistol and rifle through the late 19th to the middle 20th century which were chambered for a variety of calibers. Short barrel pistols and shotguns were part of the line. It sounds like you may have a smooth bore barrel which was designed for shot shells. It may be center fire or rim fire as both were available during Steven's manufacturing life. I recommend that you have the gun inspected by a gun smith to determine the condition and what type of ammunition can safely be fired through the gun. What you need may be available or it may be obsolete. all winchester model 1894 rifles are marked on the barrel with the caliber they are chambered in.If yours is old enough then the chambering could be worn off through use and time. You will then need to measure the diameter of the barrel, buy measuring the lands and then the grooves. This is best left to a gunsmith. He may also take a casting of the chamber and determine the cartridge that your rifle was chambered for.
Fedeally - for the rest of his life. SOME states allow partial resoration - you will have to determine if your state is one of them.

If iodine is not available, determine whether starch hydrolysis has occurred using a refractometer or plot the yeast that forms.
With a serial number that high, it must be a Model 94 made in 1977. Since the 94 has been chambered for dozens (maybe hundreds?) of different cartridges, the caliber should be marked somewhere near the back of the barrel. If it is not, the only way to determine the correct ammunition would be to have a gunsmith make a chamber cast and compare the measurements to any possible cartridges. DON'T JUST TRY CARTRIDGES UNTIL YOU FIND ONE THAT "FITS".
The easiest way to determine if it is a 38 special or 357 magnum is to see if it is marked as such on your revolver. If it is not, then take a 357 magnum cartridge and drop it into the cylinder of the revolver. If it protrudes out the end of the cylinder of the revolver it is chambered for the 38 special cartridge. The 357 magnum is a longer cartridge then the 38 special. If still in doubt take it to a gunsmith and he will be able to determine this for you.
