What is information on J Stevens double barrel shotguns?

Riverside shotguns were made by Stevens. I'm not sure when they started and stopped using this name, but the Riverside hammergun should be the Model 215 which was produced from 1913-1932.

How do you know the age of a Riverside Arms shotgun?

== == "Riverside" was a brand model shotgun produced by the J. Stevens Co. (which was bought out by Savage in 1920) - These were utility grade double barrel shotguns manufactured between 1877 and 1988. If the serial number is prefixed with a letter it was manufactured after 1949. If there is no letter, it was manufactured prior to that. Thats the best I can do.

What is the value of Syracuse Arms Co shotguns?

I just got through researching this for a friend. Found some on some gun auction sites. depending on condition, its worth is between $200 and $1,300 It really depends on the grade and condition of the shotgun. The Double Gun Journal has had several articles in the last 2 years which would allow you to identify where an individual example fits into models produced. I believe that a high grade model in excellent contition would bring over $4,000. I know of a sale during the last 12 months at $3,000. It was not the best of the available grades.

What is the value of Riverside Arms shotguns?

The Stevens division of Savage Arms made the Riverside guns from about 1916 to 1930. It was a second-tier gun to Stevens. Fit & finish may be a little rougher than those with the company name, but still a well built utility shotgun.

It may have the equivalent Stevens model number marked on the right side of the receiver (5000, 5100, 311, etc), but they are all basically the same gun.

If it is a single-shot, value would be in the range of $50-$75. A double would bring $150-$200, if an experienced gunsmith inspects and approves it.

Of course, if it is not worn out/broken/rusted it is worth next to nothing and if like new it could bring more.

Other notes:

Are the hammers on the back of the action or mounted on the sides? The sidehammers are more attractive to Cowboy Action Shooters and decorators, but either a boxlock or sidelock of this era should still be useable.

A 16 gauge will be harder to sell in many places.

How do you find information on J Stevens double barrel shotguns?

Most Stevens shotguns have a model number on the right side of the receiver (5000, 5100, 3xx, 2xx). If the company name is marked "J. Stevens Arms Co", it was made after 1920 when Stevens became a division of Savage. Sometime in the 1940's the "J" was dropped.

Riverside shotguns were made by Stevens. I'm not sure when they started and stopped using this name, but a Riverside hammergun should be the Model 215 which was produced from 1913-1932.

The Model 215 hammergun was sold as the Springfield-Stevens from 1930-1932.

On the left side of the receiver is:

What is the value of a Riverside shotgun?

The Stevens division of Savage Arms made the Riverside guns from about 1916 to 1930. A utility 16 gauge double in usable condition should be worth around $200, but I'd have a good gunsmith verify that it is in good working order.

Answer

If an experienced gunsmith inspects and approves it as a shooter, it would be worth $200+.

Example Sentences

How do you determine if a 16 gauge Riverside shotgun is chambered for 2 9-16'' instead of 2 3-4'' and is 2 9-16 ammunition available?

no doubt that many 2 3/4" shells have been fired in shotguns chambered for 2 9/16" but it is not considered safe. It is a easy fix for a gunsmith to lengthen the chamber to 2 3/4' if the gun is safe to fire. Magnum or heavy loads are not recommended for most of these old shotguns

What is the value of a Riverside Arms 16-guage pump shotgun?

Useable pump guns without one of the 3 or 4 biggest names go in the range of $100-$150. Where I live, the 16 gauge will be at the low end of the scale, but I've heard that in the deep South it could double that price.

Riverside was a brand name used by the J. Stevens division of Savage Arms around 1940-1960.

Riverside Arms Co was in business in the late 19th and early 20th century. This company was acquired by the Stevens divisio of Savage Arms sometime prior to WW2. When was a Riverside Arms double shotgun sn 23847 made and which Savage Stevens model is it similar to?

The riverside double barreled shotgun only came in two models, the 215 (exposed hammers) and 315 (internal hammers). From what I have heard, the 215 should take parts for Stevens or Savage model 215s. However, you can find Riverside parts at http://www.e-gunparts.com/products.asp?chrMasterModel=2680zDOUBLE%20BARREL&MC=

A serial number not preceded by a letter indicated the weapon was manufactured prior to 1949.

I'd bet (but only a small amount) there is a 3 or 4 digit number on the right side of the receiver which will be the Stevens model number.

Is there any reason not to shoot a Riverside Arms 16 gauge single shot?

It depends alot on the barrel - very old shotguns may have a "damascus"barrel. To manufacture Damascus barrels, iron and steel ribbons were twisted together around a rod and heated in a forge (quick and cheap). They're fairly easy to identify by the irregular pattern of short, streak-like marks around the barrel. It might be harder to spot if it's recently been reblued, but you can usually look just inside the muzzle. Damascus barrels are weaker than modern barrels and are not designed for the high gas pressures created by modern ammunition.

A Damascus barrel in good condition can be used if you shoot light loads, but if it's weakened or you put heavy loads in it the barrel may burst slightly ahead of the chamber, which could injure the shooter.

I recently obtained a model 215 Riverside (I think it's a 16 G but it doesn't say anywhere on the gun what it is) and it has a Damascus barrel. Luckily, I found a place to order parts and will be purchasing a new one.

Well, it's AT LEAST 50 years old if it's been hanging in a barn, but it's ONLY 50 years old if it's been cared for. If it looks good and the action is tight it is PROBABLY OK, but let an experienced gunsmith look it over and follow his advice.

I am the owner of a Riverside Arms 16 ga. circa 1913 that i bought at a gun auction for $50 and it has routinely out-performed my buddies new TC Contender 12 ga. which we use for grouse.

I own a 16 Ga. double barrel and it out performs most of my newer 12 ga.shotguns, if kept in good working order a gun can last a lifetime,my 16 double was made around 1913 and has the pat.pending date of feb 10 1914 engraved on the base above the triggers. they are fine shooting weapons, but do to their age I'd have it checkedout before firing it.
