How do you determine the engine size of a 1978 Ford F-150?

check the vin for the 5th number and that will tell you the engine size a or c =460ci f= 302ci h=351ci s=400ci

The fifth position of my F150's VIN is an "N". What engine type is that ?

The truck VIN's are different from the cars

I'll give an example of a 1978 Ford F150 VIN # (F14SLRE7485)

1st , 2nd , 3rd , is the series ( F14 indicates F150 4 wheel drive )

4th is the engine type ( S indicates a 400 V8 2 barrel carb )

5th is the assembly plant ( L indicates Michigan Truck ) ( " N " Norfolk Va)

6th through 11th is serial number

On a 1978 Ford Truck the engine codes are as follows : ( 4th " character " )

A - 460 v8 - 4 barrel carb.

B - 300 straight 6 cyl

C - 300 straight 6 cyl ( economy )

G - 302 V8 - 2 barrel carb

H - 351 V8 - 2 barrel carb ( modified )

J - 460 V8 - 4 barrel carb

S - 400 V8 - 2 barrel carb
