Self esteem is formed by successfully overcoming obstacles. Children have "small" obstacles like learning to walk, potty training, and learning social cues. However, many parents like to "protect" the child from unhappy consequences of life, and often mistakenly feel that they are helping the child. A child who learns from the consequences of their own actions and discovers how to avoid those consequences ends up feeling more self confident and better able to handle other problems in the future.

Building self-esteem involves practicing self-care, setting boundaries, celebrating small wins, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and challenging negative self-talk. Engaging in activities that make you feel good about yourself, setting achievable goals, and acknowledging your strengths can also help boost self-esteem over time. Remember that building self-esteem is a journey and progress may take time, so be patient and kind to yourself throughout the process.

  • You can improve your self-esteem through socializing and team building, join a club or be an art model, anything that will help you to feel more confident about yourself, and you will not have to worry about how other people see you. Or you could do something that you would like that can do good for other people. For example, do a community service.
  • I would like to recommend you read any of the books written by or about Daniel Goleman on Emotional intelligence, this will explain a lot about this area of psychology and will be a great boost to your self esteem. Also I would recommend therapy if you have problems with insecurity or the like as these are things that we learn along the way, and can be "unlearned". I am a psychology major, taking advanced courses.

Self-esteem is just confidence in ones abilities and of ones-self, and is often gradually built during childhood as you try bigger and greater things. It can be related to confidence, particularly in the case of familiarity with a situation and memories of previous success.

A good way to develop self-esteem is just to join in more activities, gradually building in difficulty as you progress (however go at your own pace, that's what its there for). The positive feeling of success and achievement becomes similar to a drug for your self-esteem, and it thrives and grows from it. It also may trigger ambition to achieve certain goals.

Well if you take that self-esteem equates to your own feelings of self-worth the start point is to work out why you have a low opinion of yourself?

There are lots of models of self-esteem but the majority look at you feelings of self-worth through two dimensions.

The first is how competent you feel about being able to live life - at work, with friends, in sports etc. If you don't feel you have this competence you need to start building it a little bit at a time. Plus make sure you ask your friends how they see you. Often you will think you are worse at something than the people around you.

The second dimension is called self-worth this is about whether you feel valued and respected by others and how much respect you have for yourself. Here you should sit and reflect on all the things that are good about you.

There is an assumption in the question that you have to develop your self-esteem. But that may not be right. There is quite a bit of evidence to say those with lower self-esteem are just cautious and those with high self-esteem can be quite nasty.
