A blood test is done for autoimmune hepatitis antibodies. The antibody test is done to check which type you may have.

A liver biopsy is taken to confirm the diagnosis and to check if and how badly the liver has been damaged.

There are different methods employed for the diagnosis of different types of Hepatitis viruses as HEPATITIS A, B, C, D, E, or G.

For the most common and life-threatening type of hepatitis that is Hepatitis B virus, diagnosis is done as follows:

  • The laboratory diagnosis of HBV is carried out most commonly by detection of Hepatitis B antigen & antibodies in the serum which can easily be detected by sensitive tests like ELISA & RIA.
  • HBcAG is not detectable in serum but can be demonstrated in the liver cells by immunofluorescence.
  • The DNA of HBV can also be detected in serum by Polymerase Chain Reaction.

Hepiatitis C is a liver disease transmitted by blood to blood contact. This can include piercings, dental work, intravenous drug use with dirty needles or even sexual contact. The disease is difficult to treat as it is often not diagnosed early in the process resulting in the need for a liver transplant.

Initial Hepatitis C testing begins with serological blood tests to detect antibodies to HCV. This can identifuy the infection as easrly as 15 weeks after exposure. The test is not 100% conclusive in all patients.

The blood test must be folloed up with liver function tests and other examinations to determine the patients status and prognosis.
