Best Answer
In Windows XP:
  1. Open Group Policy editor from Start Menu > Run > type GPEDIT.msc > [press Enter]
  2. In the Group Policy editor window, browse to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System.
  3. In the right pane, find the item called "Turn off Autoplay". Double-click on the item to open its Properties dialog.
  4. Set the property to Enabled to enable this feature.
  5. In the "Turn off Autoplay on" combo-box, select the drives for which you want to disable auto-run.

This should also work for Win 2K and Server 2K3.

Note: This feature is also available inside User Configuration. To go there, in step 2 above, in the Group Policy editor window, browse to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System, and continue as before. In this case, the configuration will be user-specific.

In case, there is a conflict between the "Turn off Autoplay" settings in Computer Configuration and User Configuration, the setting in Computer Configuration takes precedence.

This will permanently disable the auto-run feature - that is until you re-enable it again.

Disable Temporarily

To temporarily disable auto-run in drives, just keep the Shift key on the keyboard pressed while inserting the drive and until a few seconds after that.

When you connect pen drive computer gets hang?

If you're using Windows, this could be caused by several things. 1) Windows is indexing the contents of the pen drive for searching. To disable: # Press Windows key + E to open My Computer # Right click drive icon # Properties # Uncheck "Index this drive for faster searching" (This option may or may not appear. If it does not, then this is not your problem.) 2) Your antivirus software may be automatically scanning the contents of the drive. You should probably not disable this feature. 3) The Autoplay feature may be enabled and Windows is running some program set to run when the drive is connected. To disable in XP: # Start Menu # Control Panel # Hardware and Sound # "Autoplay" # Uncheck "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" To disable in Vista: # Start Menu # Control Panel # AutoPlay # Uncheck "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" 4) You may either have the drive plugged into a USB 1.0 slot, or it's plugged into a USB 2.0 slot with incorrect drivers/configuration settings. (This problem is a bit more complex and should be the subject of an entire question.)

Why doesn't Windows Vista recognize your SD card?

If you use the search bar in Vista (premium and ultimate users) just as you click the start button, type autoplay, select the item and make sure the autoplay is set to on or enable. This should cause autoplay to detect the SD card inserted and offer you options to play or open the card's data. If this does not work, find either a PC professional or someone who understand how to use the windows registry and have the registry check. I had to stop and start autoplay in my registry to get it to work, again.
