I have a 1993 Protege. The hold button keeps the transmission from up shifting. I use it when I am coming down the hill in my neighborhood. Rather than braking the hold button keeps the trans in a lower gear and I remain at a safe neighborhood speed.

It allows the transmission to be HELD in one gear, longer than normal. Once you release the HOLD button the trans will shift normally. A HOLD button, keeps the transmission either in a gear or in a range of gears, according to a moderately complicated algorithm which "lets you shift for yourself."
it just resets the shift points on the trans. it allows you to hold a gear a little longer.

Remove the fuse. on mine all you have to do is start car hold down the lock button on drivers door when you hear it beep 4 times the lock will only open and lock from the button may have to hold button down a couple of times to get all 4 beeps
