Do not put it in with your regular garbage since that goes to a landfill. The less toxic matter there, the better. Most places have a collection area for items, like old paint and solvents, that you can deliver to. Check with your local city or county. In our town, volunteers run a First Saturday at the City annex where you can drop off hazardous items, including Computer Monitors.

Separate them from each other OUTSIDE the home. Let them dry completely. They are now safe to throw away in a dumpster or trash can. If you do not do this it is possible for them to catch on fire all by themselves I have seen it happen. Spontaneous combustion is real.

You have to take it to your local hazardous dumping area where they will take care of it.

Look up your hazardous waste disposal online.

How do you dispose of mineral spirits?

Anything containing linseed oil has the potential to spontaneously combust. Storage of old paint rags, brushes, etc. in a tightly sealed metal can such as an old paint can will prevent spontaneous combustion. Rags etc. that are soaked with paint thinner or oil based paint should be left to dry out then disposed of. Old paint cans can be left to dry out before being disposed of at a local waste disposal facility or trash (if permitted). Old cans of unused paint can be disposed of at specificd locations identified by your local dump personel or online at your city or county web site.
