press z, then press whatever u press to jump.
You have to do the regular long jump (A+Z), then hold z and release A. Press A when you land. You should do another jump. After that (still holding Z), press A and press back on the analog stick, then press A when you hit the ground (still holding Z) and you should go backwards.
DO a regular long jump forward, and when you land do another one, and after about two jumps hold the opposite direction and you should do a backward long jump. Works best w/ Luigi.

To do the side jump in Super Mario 64, you must be running in one direction. You must then turn the opposite direction. While Mario's head is facing one way and his body facing another, press "A" to jump. If you timed it correctly, you will have completed the side jump.
