The ING New York City Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, November 6, 2011.
The New York City Marathon is a very popular marathon and not everyone who applies will be able to run. Runners are selected by a lottery which occurs in April prior to the event. There are three simultaneous drawings based at random on three categories - "Tri-state area" applicants (within 60 miles of NYC), "national" applicants (greater than 60 miles outside of NYC) and "international" applicants. The drawings are done at random.
There are guaranteed spots that are made available though charity teams (such as Team in Training), Members of New York Road Runners (must meet additional requirements such as completing 9 NYRR races, have volunteered at one event in 2010 or made a $1000 donation to a selected volunteer program), if you were a 2010 entrant that deferred registration until 2011, runners who have completed 15 or more NYC marathons, applicants who have been denied entry over the past three years (2008, 2009 & 2010). There is also guaranteed entry through International Travel Partners for runners who live outside of the U.S.
There is an $11 nonrefundable application fee for all entrants.
In 2010, there were 125,500 applicants and there were 45,000 runners on marathon day.
