Doing this sort of research is like solving a mystery. You have to make intelligent use of whatever clues you have and chase down the leads.

If you know when the person died you can search newspaper archives for the obituary . You can search for death certificates and from the place of death, you may be able to make a reasonable guess of the cemetery. You can search many cemetery records on line and people have made records of old cemeteries so if you can made a guess of possible cemeteries you can search there.

Some links are given below. You can find books on how to do genealogical research at your local library or you can actually hire someone to search for you.

If you know the name of the person who you are looking for then search their name on the internet or on a list of people's names at a certain graveyard.

Most graveyards have an office where you can inquire to find the location of the burial plot.

Some graveyards are being cataloged on the internet, complete with GPS coordinates to the location.

The most direct way to find out who is buried in a particular cemetery is to go to the cemetery office when they are open, or phone them, and ask whether a particular person is buried there. A letter request can also be mailed, and some cemeteries will also obtain a photo of a limited number of grave stones, sometimes at a nominal fee, if asked. Most offices are happy to look up a few names, but are not staffed to check a large number, or to provide a list of everyone there. However, more and more cemeteries are making lists of their burials available in the internet, so the office can be asked about that. Their hope is that those who find a relative will be interested in paying to support continuing care of the grave site. In addition, local genealogy societies often obtain cemetery lists, or create them, and make them available to members or on the internet. And some ethnic groups are compiling country-wide and world-wide lists of the burials of members of their groups, including names and locations. Finally, it is possible to walk smaller cemeteries, or sections of larger cemeteries and make a list for yourself.
