You can't, no one wins anything in war! You are AWARDED a medal or decoration. All you civilians out there; let that sink in. That is a tremendous difference and that difference means a lot to us. Basically, it has to do with the memory of those "who are forever young", for in this "game" not everyone is alive when it's over. Other than that, Google it.

The Silver Star was not awarded in World War 1. There was what was called a Citation Star given out in that era (beginning in 1918). Check the National Archives. A link can be found below.

Yes he did, he also received the Bronze Star and 3 Purple Hearts while serving 2 tours of duty in Vietnam.
The US Military M-1 steel helmet was used by the US Air Force (part of the US Army during WW2), US Marines, US Navy/Coast Guard, and the US Army during WW2, the Korean War and Vietnam War. During WW2 & Korea, the US Army steel helmet was worn WITHOUT a camoflage cloth cover; but sometimes with a net to place natural vegetation into the openings for camoflage. US Marines were issued camoflage cloth covers for all 3 wars. Because US Army rank could not be pinned (attached) to the Army's steel helmet it could be painted on. One vertical line gold/yellow for 2nd LT, silver for 1st LT, and two vertical silver lines for CPT (Captain). During the Vietnam War those gold/silver colors went to "black", called "subdued colors." The Vietnam War was the FIRST war in which the US Army issued the camoflage cloth steel helmet covers for general issue to ALL US Army personnel. Subdued (black) rank could now be pinned/attached to the front of those helmets (attached to the cloth). I work with a fellow police officer who cliams to have won both the bronz star and silver star during Vietnam yet was never wonded. He further claims to served 3 tours of duty in country with the U.S. Army. I find it hard to belive an individual won both awards. Does anyone know of this happening?

It indicates that the person buried there was the recipient of the Silver Star Medal, the Army's fourth highest award (behind Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, and Distinguished Service Medal). It usually is represented by an engraved SS or SSN, instead of an actual metal silver star.
