This artillery unit was originally the 52d Artillery Regiment, Coast Artillery Corps. It was redesignated the 286th Coast Artillery Battalion August 3, 1944. It was redesignated the 538th Field Artillery Battalion on November 20, 1944. The 538th Artillery was one of the 238 "separate" artillery battalions in the European Theater of Operations. It was a 240MM howitzer battalion.

The hill was listed as being 875 meters high on old French maps of Vietnam. It was south and west of Dak To, Vietnam, in Kontum Province near the junction of the Vietnam, Laos and Cambodian borders. The Battle of Hill 875 was started by an initial assault by 330 men of Alpha, Charlie and Delta Companies of the 2d Battalion (Airborne) 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade on Sunday the 19th of November 1967. On the 20th of November as the sun was setting the 4th Battalion 503d Infantry arrived to reinforce 2/503. The Battle ended on Thansgiving Day 1967. Medals of Honor were awarded to Chaplain (Major) Charles Watters and SP4 Carlos Lozada.
That's the Battle of Franklin . The Confederates weren't retreating, they were advancing. What they didn't realize was that Schofield was making a tactical retreat, in order to link up with George Thomas in Nashville, and had no wish to make a stand at Franklin. The battle was unnecessary.
November 8, 1965 was the date that 1st Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade (Sky Soldiers) engaged over 1200 Viet Cong on Hill 65, War Zone D. The Sky Soldiers lost 48 men killed in action but inflicted over 400 dead on the Viet Cong. For his actions during this engagement, Specialist 6 Lawrence Joel became the first black man since the Spanish American War to receive the Medal of Honor other than posthumously. Holland's Camp Vught was liberated on 27 October 1944 by the 5th battalion The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders. Part of the 51st Highland Division, fighting under command of the Canadian 1st Army. The Canadians did not liberate the camp. My father was one of the first men to enter the camp. visit www.keep-em-moving.com to see his photos and story. There were no Canadians in Vught until 4th November.

It appears that elements of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment were deployed in Operation Eagle Claw to rescue the 53 American Hostages held by Islamic students in Iran for 444 days from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981.
