A web search for "(brand name) Serial Numbers" will frequently take you to a site or link where these can be looked up. However, this will depend on the gun. Data is published for some, but not all. Remington, for example, used a letter code on the barrel for many years that gave the month and date of manufacture. Marlin used a letter prefix to the serial number on some lever action rifles. There is no magic number that is part of the SN that tells the year.

The model number of the gun and make along with the serial number usually will determine the age of a gun.
Find out who the maker of the gun is and see if they can help you with the model name and number. If this is an old gun and the maker is no longer in business check with a professional appraiser. The number by itself does not mean much.
