Barring non-faked documents, non-faked photographs, these days (since the frauds have advanced their skills over time) the only way to tell friend from foe (real from fake) is by interrogation by a bonafide Vietnam Combat Veteran.
Anyone else can do it too, but they're going to have to study up. There going to have to know how GIs really pronounced "Bien Hoa", as an example...not like that "War planes fella on the history channel"; Realizing it's not his fault, it's the technical military adviser and/or the script writers. But it sure sounded ridiculous when he said, "Ben Hooey" (it's Ben Wa).
It's little things like that (tricks of the trade) that can catch a faker. Or "button up", (shutting hatches on your track...slang for armored vehicle in Vietnam...and not the V-100 Cadillac Gage Armored Car!; the MPs used that). Of course the Australian Centurion tankmen used the term "Close down." US Infantrymen were called "Grunts", Australian Infantrymen called themselves "Crunchies." US tankcrewmen were called tankers, Australian tankcrewmen were called "tankies."
Wanna catch a faker? Study up!
