If you look on the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) at the bottom of the windshield there will be a long string of numbers and letters. In that string a section of three will say "U53" "U54" "U55" U53-Mountaineer 4x2 U54-Mountaineer 4x4 U55-Mountaineer AWD hope this helps u out

AnswerIt would be all wheel drive not 4 wheel drive. the v-8 emblems on the fender and the tailgate say all wheel drive. Also look under the front of the vehicle at the inside brake rotor area if it's all wheel drive there will be an axle going into that area.

Many ways but the most obvious would be a 4WD shift lever inside the truck. If there is a level to shift it into 4wd then it is 4wd. No lever and it is 2wd. You can also just look under the front of the van. If you see a differential like the one in the rear it is 4wd. No differential and it is 2wd.

For a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer : With engine oil filter change the 4.0 litre SOHC , V6 engine takes : ( 4.7 litres / 5.0 U.S. quarts of 5W-30 engine oil )

User Avatar

you can if you change or swap the output shaft and remove the tail housing. the inspection cover is also different on the 2wd vs the 4wd and will not give the added strength when bolted on like the 4wd does.

Looking at the front suspension, look for axle stubs with rubber boots extending from the front differential to the front hub assembly (just inside the front tires) The presence of both the axle stubs and the front differential signify AWD/4WD
