Just Google the program or file name in question. You are sure to find some description on the internet.

running and what programs/services should be shut down for
security reasons.what i do sometimes is press control-alt-delete
and look at the processes tab,any programs running i don't reconize
i just google them to see if its legit or possible trojans etc.
