To find the top dead center on a 2000 Jetta 1.8T, remove the engine splash guard inside the wheel well on the right side. Locate the main crankshaft pulley nut and see the intake manifold. That is the top dead center. ?æ?æ
I think you will find that this truck is fuel injected and has no carburetor. If I am wrong and it has a carburetor it is mounted on top of the engine dead center on the intake manifold.
The best way ive ever found to find top dead center of any engine is to insert a screwdriver into the opening for a sparkplug and rotate the crank until the the screwdriver comes out to the farthest point. This will be the TDC of that cylinder.

Man, depends on the car and whether it's electronic ignition with coil-packs or distributer. In your manual, find out where the #1 cylinder is... Take out that sparkplug. Stick your finger (or the tip of a screwdriver) in the hole and turn the engine by hand. When you feel the piston come all the way up, you're at top dead center.

take of driver side valve cover, so you can see the rocker arms move. Turn the engine while watching the intake valve rocker for number one cylinder move. When the intake valve has just closed you should be close to the balancers mark for top dead center. That is the top dead center mark you will be looking for when putting distributer and wires back on.
