There are several ways, depending upon what you know. If you know where and approximately when your grandfather was born, look for a birth certificate. These are normally kept at the county level.

If you know where he died, request a copy of his death certificate, also usually kept at the county level.

Finally, if your grandfather died after 1936, you may request records from the Social Security Administration. The current fee is $27 per record when the Social Security Number is known, and $29 when the number is unknown or incorrect. You are charged the fee even if the SSA is unable to locate any information on the person.
