If by cooling system you mean the cooling fan, it takes a while for the coolant temperature to rise enough to trigger the temperature sensor that activates the fan. This is to help warm up the engine and to avoid unnecessary operation of the cooling fan when it is not needed.

the only way 2 take the engine out of a 306 diesel is out through the bottom as the lower pully for the fan belt will stop the engine coming up the hole way take it out complete with the gearbox its quicker and easer
Peugeot 306 fan still runs after the engine is off and this is after a short journey.it has been a while since you put coolant in it and oil but could it be anything else?
My 306 does the same just had a new rad fitted and sensors so the fan keeps running till the engine cools just make sure it gets new coolent and a flush once a year along with an oil change .
