To fix high idle problem on a 1996 VS Commodore, first locate the idle air control valve. Unscrew and unplug electrical connector running to the valve. Turn the valve over and clean the sensor for debris.

Im not sure about a 92, but when it happened to my 98, i had to replace the Idle control valve. its generally about 50 bucks and is very easily done.
its the valve on the right side. mounted on the intake manifold. if u remove it and clean it realy good, you can re-use it and it will fix the irratic high/low idle.

Well I found out the answer on my own.................thank you very much! It turns out it was the pcv valveon my vechile. Another thing that can cause it would be your (IAC Valve) aka idle air control valve or it could be a engine vaccum leak. Good luck.
The idle control valve needs to be replaced. It's mounted behind the throttle body. Just replaced mine to fix same problem. Cost $65.00 at auto parts store.
