This answer is applicable to all Miatas from 1990-2005. The power antenna is controlled by a motor that pushes and pulles a nylon, ribbed "cord". It is common that the nubs on the rope will wear down so the motor can't grab it.

You need to determine if the actual motor is broken, or if just the mast is broken.

  1. If you turn on the radio and hear the motor running, it is most likely the rope has broken and you only need to replace the mast. It should sound exactly as it normally should if it were working. This is inexpensive to fix and can be done at home.
  2. If you do not any sound, or it is very different from usual, you most likely need a new power antenna unit altogether. This is about $150, and can be done at home as well.

Look very closely at the black, plastic ring around the antenna. You will see two small holes. The ring is simply screwed in, but you'll need to purchase some cheap, snap-ring pliers (about $7 USD) to remove it. This will allow you to remove the entire trim ring and work.

If you only need to change the mast
  1. Once the ring is off, power the radio on, so the motor is "pushing" the antenna up. You can then pull up on the mast and pull the hole antenna out, including the nylon cord.

  2. There is a metal sheath around the base of the antenna. You'll need to remove this and replace it on your new antenna.

  3. Stick the new antenna with nylon cord into the antenna hole. Have a friend turn off the radio, while you gently bob the antenna cord, to "fish" for the power antenna's gear. This may take a few tries. Be prepared to carefully install the mast once you find it's pulling!

  4. Once it is in, replace the trim ring.

If you need to change the entire unit
  1. Remove the trim ring as noted above.
  2. Remove the interior carpet paneling from the trunk. They are held in by simple, plastic pop fasteners. Use your fingernail or a small flathead screwdriver to lift the center (do not remove it), and you'll be able to then remove the whole round fastener.
  3. You'll see the unit on the left, it is held in by a few bolts and an wires. It will be very easy to figure out once you're in the trunk.
  4. Replace the unit, and put the snap ring back on.
