I just recently replaced the handle on my 96 corolla. First I purchased a replacement part online from: http://www.partstrain.com/products/Door_Handle/1993~Toyota~COROLLA.html?sku=T462119 Replacing it was fairly easy. 1. Remove the 1 screw from the middle of the handle assembly 2. Push the entire assemy forward, toward the front of the car 3. Release the clip that holds the metal bar to the handle (I had to pry mine off and broke it in the process- fortunately the replacement I purchased came with it's own clip - see paragraph below for trick to removing/attaching clip). 4. Remove the old handle and assembly and replace it with the new one. 5. Attach the clip like it was before and screw it back in place.
The trick for the clip in steps 3 and 4 above is that it snaps down into a hole in the handle and then will swivel back and forth so it will slip over the horizontal part of the wire that goes to the door release. Don't try to remove the clip from or insert the clip into the handle while the wire is in it - it's too hard. The easiest way to get it off is to swivel it off the horizontal part of the wire while it's still attached to the handle and slide the wire out of the hole in the clip. Then put the clip that came with your new handle in the handle before you put it up to the door. Insert the wire through the clip and swivel it around so that it clamps on to the horizontal part of the wire. (I bought my handles on eBay and got the driver and passenger handles including shipping for less than just one of them cost any where else I found them.)
Before you remove the clip & while still attached to the handle assy. Tie a piece of string around the rod. That way incase you drop the rod it doesnt fall inside the door. A major Pain in the Butt, Once the assy is replaced & your ready to slide it back in & replace the screw, cut the string.
