I have had the same problem on my C320 and it's simple to fix You will need 2 screw drivers Look at the gas cap and you should have a metal piece on each side of the cap which is on a spring . You need to slightly pry up both sides and rotate the plastic peice underneath it so both line up correctly. This happens if when the cap is turned to many times and the cap actually goes into the close position even though it's not on. If the cap isn't tight you will also get a check engine light signal, this will go away once you fix the cap. Total process should take you under 5 min. to fix.

The air being pushed out by the incoming gasoline has no good outlet.
The gas gauge sensor is most likely stuck. It is inside of the tank and over time it will get corroded.
The 2002 Ford Focus windshield washer tank is held in place by four retaining bolts. Remove the retaining bolts and the windshield washer hose. Reverse the process to install the new windshield washer tank.
I have a 2002 Mercury mountaineer, took it to the ford/Mercury dealer, They said there is a valve inside of it and this is why i can put gas in it. $1200 to replace. I guess I need to find a used tank for $100 and do it my self.
you fill gas in it
The tank is not venting properly.
It's inside the fuel tank, attatched to the fuel pump. Look under the back seat for the access to it. I have it in my book, but it doesn't show me where the heck mine is for my 2002 Outback Wagon.
