Entry door installation really starts with the preparation. Entry doors need to keep out wind, rain and even snow, depending on your climate. If you don't get it right the first time, you could end up doing damage to the surrounding framing.
Start by leveling the sill and apply a sill guard. This will direct any water to the exterior of the building.
Use an ez bracket system instead of wood shims, this will allow you to easily adjust the door when installing it.
Don't forget to flash the top of the door. This keeps water from getting in behind the door frame and rotting the framing.

Replacing the wood frame would be a better, longer term fix. The screen door will also last better with the proper fix.
