On the lancer its easy just pop the trunk open find out which lights are out and take the screws out that hold the lights in place and pop the bulb out that isn't working by turning it and replace it.
In a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer replacing the rear light bulb is relatively easy. First remove the plastic cover from the dome light. Unscrew the light bulb and insert the replacement.
The brakelight switch, wiring, bulb holder(s) or bulb is shorting out.
Short in the wiring or light bulb socket.
Is the bulb out on the 3rd Brake Light? Check bulb, harness attachment and wiring. Most likely its the bulb. See sources and related links below for bulb information.
The most common reason is a bulb failure. If the bulb is known working, or replacing the bulb does not cure the problem, look to the fuse, switch and wiring.
Could be switch on gearbox, wiring or bulb.
Try chamging the bulb, and if that doesnt solve your problem, check all the wiring.

The dims lights may not work on a Ford Focus if the switch is defective, the wiring is damaged, or the bulb has burnt out. If both bulbs are out, it is most likely within the wiring.
