My 95 Nissan 200SX has this same problem and I'm sure it has something to do with a gap in the electrical or faulty wiring. All I have to do is bang really hard on the dash a couple of times and it comes back on. Good luck. :)

Wow. This certainly appears to be a common problem. I have had this since buying the car new. On mine it is the dial you use to adjust the brightness of the dash. The thing has never worked right but I have always been able to get it back on by fidgeting with the dial.
