1997 Dodge ram 1500 tried head light switch did not work.head lights and running lights do not work at the same time.
Have you tried the dimmer switch? It is usually located next to the headlights switch. On pull out headlight switches, rotating the switch itself clockwise or counter clockwise is the dimmer switch and interior light switch.
There should be a resistor switch next to the head light switch if it's on the dash board, should be a separate switch on the dash anyway. some roll like a wheel, good luck
Have you tried brake light switch located on brake pedal or in that area?
Dash lights and tail lights are on the same fuse.
answer: replace the headlights switch.
if you've tried hitting the high/low beam switch & headlights are out on both, then a bad headlight switch or headlight switch plug or high/low beam switch plug not fully engaged.
Did you try turning the dimmer switch to a lower setting, sometimes the dome light will stay on even if the door is closed if the switch is set to high. But if the dimmer switch is set propertly, and the light remains on for a few minutes, the problem is most probably a defective relay. There are 3 relays on my 97 Ford Ranger, and I have not found out which controls the light. The relays cost too much just to buy 3 of them. If tou have tried dimmer switch and that did not work try using wd 40 on the the latches. The interior lights stay on until the switch in the door is cleaned and lubed. The switch is within door latches on for ranger. !
Of course ,first check the fusebox. If all fuses check out ok, I think the headlight switch is bad. I had a problem with indicator lights and my running lights were not working.(Tail lights,). I tried everything and finally replaced the headlight switch and that fixed it! About $25.00
If the fuse keeps blowing, there is a short somewhere. Since the dash and tail lights both go through the headlight switch, I would check the wires from the switch connection all the way to the tail lights, and the dash lights. Somewhere, a wire is crushed to ground or something like that. Make sure your switch is property connected and is a good switch! Good luck!
On an older car I had the same problem. I got under the vehicle and found a switch activated by the pressure of the linkage when the vehicle was put in reverse. The switch was bad. I tried cleaning the road grime off it, but it still didn't work properly. Ended up buying one and replacing it, worked great after that. It wasn't difficult to replace. check the brake light switch adjustment. if it's off a little, reverse lights may stay on. possible brake light switch replacement needed.
Have you tried pulling the round headlamps switch/knob out (ie. toward you), when the headlamps are switched on ?
Short circuit , maybe ????
