how do you fix play in a 1997 mercury mountainer steering wheel
power steering fluid dumped out what caused this
It could be that your tierods are completely gone or the play is in the steering box .I have heard that there is a adjusting screw on the steering box to help with the play , but not sure .
This is was a problem on Dodge 2500 trucks prior to 2003 (or 2004?). You have to steer like crazy to keep it on the road. I've notice the steering on these rigs to be a lot looser than on my F350 or my Chev 3500. There is an aftermarket kit you can get to fix it.

If the truck has a til wheel there are three screw that hold the tilt mechanism to the top of the column. They can be accessed by removing the plastic cover at the dash and using an Allen wrench to tighten them. . Thaske 10 min to fix
If you have play that means you have worn parts. You will need to determine what parts are worn and replace them. The vehicle will need to be put on a rack and inspected.
That much play is usually a bad steering gear box. Best bet would be to get a new one. It could also be some extremely worn tie rod ends.
It has to be changed because the oil will get into your alternater and it will be toast in a short period of time
